Kalathas is a small natural bay on the edge of a ravine, 10 km northeast from Chania. It is an ideal place if you want to do unwind and relaxing holidays.
Here there is a famous, quiet, sandy beach lined by pine trees and a lovely islet in front. You can treat yourself with windsurfing rental and instruction lessons, waterskiing, canoes or scuba diving. There is a restaurant built on the sand and beachvolley field on the beach. It is a fine place to take a day trip from Chania or stay for a few days.
Another excellent, sandy beach can be found in Stavros (6 km north); it is a narrow strip of sandy beach dominated by a mammoth rock shelf. Moreover, the Tersanas beach (3 km northwest) and the Marathi beach (6 km southeast) worth visiting.
While staying in the Kalathas village you should visit some of the great Monasteries and churches of the Akrotiri Peninsula, "The Holly Mountain of Crete". The most important are the Gouverneto (Lady of the Angels) and the Katholiko (Agios Ioannis the Hermit).
The village is 20 minutes far from the international airport of Chania in Akrotiri and half an hour from the port of Souda. There is frequent (six times per day) transportation connection with the centre of Chania. Sometimes, especiall during the weekends, the sandy beach may be crowded but even like that it is a fine place to visit for a few hours.
