The lake of Kournas is the only freshwater lake of Crete. It is located about 45 km west of Chania and 15 km east of Rethymnon, a few km next to the national road. It covers a total area of about 160,000 sq. m. with a depth of up to 25 metres.
There is dense vegetation surrounding the scenic lake and the southeastern bank which is lined with olive trees. A strip of white sand beside the lake provides an area for swimming, cafes and a few tavernas. The lake of Kournas is also suitable for canoe and water-cycling. On the road above the lake more cafes and tavernas with breathtaking views are located.
The lake of Kournas is in a very short distance (about 5 km) from the seaside villages of Georgioupolis and Kavros.
